Homeschoolers With H.E.A.R.T.S Launch Food Drive (YOUR CITY/STATE) During the months of May and June, homeschoolers who are associated with the organization H.E.A.R.T.S. (Homeschoolers Educating, Assisting, & Reaching-out Through Service) will be participating in various food drive activities in a myriad of communities across the United States. Hundreds of homeschoolers are expected to participate in activities which will benefit a diverse range of food banks, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters and no kill animal shelters throughout the U.S. and beyond. While some homeschooling families will simply grow or purchase extra food to donate, others will establish donation stations in their homes or neighborhoods, and will solicit contributions. Other homeschoolers will be donating their time and energy to projects such as preparing and serving meals at their local soup kitchens, bagging groceries for delivery to homebound and at risk populations, or earning extra money to donate to food based charities. Studies carried out by the Census Bureau and the US Department of Agriculture in 2003 indicate that in the United States alone, 12.6 million households (11.2 percent of all households, or 36 million Americans including 13 million children) were categorized as living in food insecure households and/or households experiencing hunger. The Economic Research Service of the United States Department of Agriculture states that food insecurity occurs whenever the availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food, or the ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways, is limited or uncertain. Hunger is defined as the uneasy or painful sensation caused by a recurrent or involuntary lack of food and is a potential, although not necessary consequence of food insecurity. Over time, hunger may result in malnutrition. Homeschoolers across America are actively engaging in activities to combat this daunting problem.
