Implementing and following safety and health procedures in the workplace is an important part of the business. Especially when there are new workers, occupational safety and health become very vital to be implemented in the company. Based on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the majority of accidents that occur in the workplace are experienced by new workers due to lack of experience, not being trained properly, or not understanding the applicable occupational safety and health policies.
The BLS also stated that almost a third of the total non-fatal work-related injuries or illnesses in the workplace were experienced by workers with less than one year of experience. As a lawyer who often faces accidents at work, Mike Morse feels that prospective employees should read carefully about the agreement for occupational safety and health.
Nearly a quarter of these cases resulted in 31 days and even more lost workdays. Some new workers have a higher risk of injury. In the agriculture, forestry, and fishing industries, 45.4 percent of work-related injuries and illnesses occurred among workers with less than one year of experience. Meanwhile, in the construction and extraction industries, around 34.9 percent of work-related injuries and illnesses occurred.
In this regard, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) also focuses its attention on protecting young workers and temporary workers both of which fall into the category of new workers. OSHA states that when new workers start their jobs, they are at greater risk of injury.
OSHA also has known the cause. New workers are often not adequately trained in dealing with potential hazards in the workplace and the control measures to be taken.
